A stocking loan is a finance agreement between a car dealer and a finance company, allowing the dealer to stock vehicles for sale. Key points:

  1. Purpose: Enables dealers to have vehicles available without immediate purchase.
  2. Ownership: The finance company retains ownership until the vehicle is sold.
  3. Settlement: Upon sale, the dealer settles the finance before transferring ownership.

If your CarVeto report indicates a 'Stocking Loan' finance, we recommend:

  • Contact the finance company using the details provided
  • Confirming their financial interest in the vehicle
  • Obtaining information on settling the finance
  • Requesting a settlement letter before purchasing

These steps help ensure a safe and legal transaction.

Yes. Knowingly selling a car with outstanding finance is illegal, as the finance company still owns the vehicle, wholly or partly. However, a bank loan not secured against the vehicle differs and doesn't typically affect the car's ownership status.

Yes. CarVeto provides links to askMID, the official Motor Insurance Database, where you can check a vehicle's insurance status.

Note: Vehicles held by dealers may not appear as insured on askMID, as they often use 'traders policies' covering multiple vehicles simultaneously.
